Useful Links #6

May 7th, 2007 · 10 Comments

In this latest article in the series of useful links you’ll find a list of directories to submit your website to, a way to generate unique passwords, a list of essential web design tools as well as links to some great WordPress themes and plugins. You’ll also discover how to download YouTube videos to your hard drive, more online file storage resources, tutorials on how to make more money with your WordPress site and how to keep track of all your comments.

Submitting your website to directories is something I’ve looked at before on Twenty Steps. There are the obvious benefits to getting some link love as well as the occasional bit of traffic too. However there’s no point in submitting your site to a load of directories which nobody uses so have a look at this directory list. It ranks directories based on their popularity, cost and saturation.

Next up in our list of useful links is an application I use all of the time. If you subscribe to a number of different online services, the chances are that you use the same combination of passwords. This is leaving you open to trouble so why not use this random password generator? It’s dead easy to use and you can set your own parameters.

Looking for ideas for colour schemes of your next website? Maybe you’re after widgets or fonts or some icons or you just can’t remember how to include the © symbol on your website. Well don’t worry any more, my little chickadees. Just bookmark the Web Design Tools page in your favourite browser and everything will be cool in your garden once more.

Whilst I’m about it, another site that’s worth bookmarking if you’re a web developer, blogger or anyone who publishes on t’internet, the Web Developers Handbook is jam packed with links to other resources including CSS, colour tools, SEO, WordPress themes and plugins.

Seen a video on YouTube that you’d like to keep? Then look no further than Zamzar. Not only do they offer video conversion but they’ll pretty much convert any blummin’ file you care to mention into whatever you want. Genius. More YouTube saving options can also be found on this article at Mashable.

In Useful Links #5 we looked at online file storage options. Well The Blog Joint has put together a list of online storage options. Worth a look.

If you are a WordPress user then you should get your butt over to the 7 Essential WordPress Hacks video series at Tubetorial. It covers some excellent topics including how to get more traffic to your WordPress blog, how to make money with AdSense and how to stop spammers. Each video is around 5 mins in length and very easy to follow. Thoroughly recommended!

Finally, one of the things I enjoy about blogging is leaving comments on other peoples sites. I don’t do it as often as I should and am making a conscious and deliberate attempt to comment more. Not only does it show the blogger that people appreciate their work but it can also be a good source of traffic to your blog. However unless the blogger has installed the subscribe to comments WordPress plugin, it’s easy to lose track of the conversation. That’s why co.mments is a great service. It allows you to bookmark posts you want to follow, track the conversation and get updated when new comments are made. I’ve just started using it and it looks like a great service.

A password generator site aside from creating true random passwords also creates leet passwords.

Really useful post - I’ve now added the “subscribe to comments WordPress plugin” to my blog - wish I’d known about it several weeks ago - note to self - look for more useful plugins!

DJ - Thanks for the heads up on your site. Looks pretty good.

John - Thanks for stopping by and glad you found the post helpful. Looking at your site, I would have thought you would be prime for Text Link Ads. Have you looked into them yet?

It’s on my list but I got the impression the money would be relatively low (new site, only just got PR and no idea where it is in Alexa).

Maybe I should take another look…

Definitely worth a look. Whilst the money might be initially low, the benefits are that it’s a regular revenue stream whereas you have no control over AdSense earnings. You can also monetize your feed as well which is a great option.

With regards to Alexa, it’s possible to increase your Alexa ranking fairly easily. Have a look at the article I put together the other day - Use Your Alexa Rank to Make Money. By installing the widget in the sidebar and the Firefox extension, I’ve already chipped away at my ranking.

OK you’ve got me interested, I’ve signed up (through your link). Will read the Alexa article too - thanks.

Cheers, John. Let me know how you get on.

      Mike - Thanks

Yes I’m going to look into it.

With adsense there is no control who advertises.

Also I’m looking into ways to bring in revenue from the site.

      So your suggestion is good.

      Thanks
      DJ

Let me know how you get on, DJ.

I have to say that I’m becoming more and more of a fan of TLA as the days go on. I love ‘em!
