The Numbers Game

If you’re looking to make money from your blog I think that one of the most important things you need to remember outside of fantastic content is the time of day you’re posting. It makes a massive difference to your traffic and therefore your opportunities to earn money.

Looking at my webstats, I can see that the two most popular hours in the day for traffic are 11am and 10pm with 2pm coming in a close third. These times are British Summer Times so how does that stack up?

11am is people at work in the UK having their first surf of the day after wading through their inbox and attempting to convince the boss that they’re actually doing some work.

2pm is a combination of people coming back from lunch in the UK and the States waking up and logging on.

10pm are my readers over in the States. It’s the tail end of the day and they’re enjoying a quick dip in the internet before heading off for the day.

So how does all this affect making money from blogging? Well as I suggested in my Technorati and Blogging article, a great way to generate traffic and therefore potential AdSense clicks is to write about a popular topic.

I’ve just popped over to Technorati to see what the current popular searches and tags are. Pluto, unsurprisingly, is top of both searches at the moment. Now if I were to write a post about Pluto at 4am UK time, the chances are that nobody would pick up on the article via Technorati as it would be buried down the list by the time anyone in the UK woke up and logged on. Conversely if I were to write about Pluto and post it at 10pm the chances are I would pick up a fair amount of traffic.

I’ve definitely seen traffic spikes on some of my other blogs when I’ve written about hot Technorati topics. The other day I posted on my Blogger blog about YouTube and watched the hit counter soar as people clicked on the link from Technorati. Of the 100 visitors I got to the site that day, 80% were from Technorati so it definitely works.

Another thing to consider when posting on your blog is not to post when you’ve had a few beers as my 11pm post on Thursday shows….

Interesting Mike. I haven’t yet checked my stats but that would seem to make sense:

Morning break time at the office water cooler and just before bedtime for most working people.

Thanks for the moral support with our little exchange with Darren Rowse.

Did you happen to catch his statement: “my most successful blogs make very little”.

If indeed that is true, I wonder which blog then is making these alleged 6 figures? If his most successful blogs aren’t making money, is he saying his least successful blog(s)are? That doesn’t make sense to me and how could we even verify that?

I’m still waiting for his answer on that one. But I’m not holding my breath.

One other thing that I should have mentioned in the post is avoid posting your best stuff at the weekend. Look at a graph of your monthly traffic and you can immediately spot the weekends by the dip.

I’m a great believer in trying to post something every day but I think weekend posts shouldn’t be your “best” posts. Obviously it depends on the overall purpose of your blog but I’m assuming that anyone who is blogging is doing so because they want someone to read what they’ve written and you’ve got a better chance of a larger audience posting Mon-Fri.

No problem regarding the debate on your site, BB. I don’t think that what he’s doing is wrong. He’s wanting to earn money by selling his knowledge. That’s fine. I agree with you, though, that the branding of the product “Six Figure Blogging” is misleading at best, dishonest at worst.

Yeah I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting on a reply either but I hope that the combined responses on your site will make him consider rebranding at some point further down the line.

Right I’m off to borrow a friends credit card and start blogging my way to my six figure salary 😉

I agree with mike about weekends. There is a definite drop at that time. Some interesting ideas with the timing though. I think what is most interesting is your careful eye on what is being searched for on Technorati and then posting around the peak hours.

    Hi Daniel,

That is, of course, when Technorati is actually working properly which it isn’t at the moment!

The weekends I am now devoting to development of new sites and articles. Very rarely do I post at weekends unless it’s something I deperately need to get out of my head.

    Thanks for stopping by.
