It’s been interesting to read some of the fallout of SiteMeters recent change of policy regarding tracking cookies. If you hadn’t picked up on it, the previously popular free site stats program has started serving specificclick cookies to visitors of sites using the service.
Whilst SiteMeter should hang their heads in shame for what they’ve done without consulting their vast user base, I couldn’t help but smirk when reading outraged blog owners saying that they were going to switch to Google Analytics because they didn’t like their stats service collecting data.
Ermm…is this the same Google who are aggressively trying to capture as much information about user habits through all of their products in order to more effectively sell advertising to them?
Just asking, like…

Anyone looking for a great web stats alternative that doesn’t steal your soul? http://gostats.com
(GoStats doesn’t update everyone on each and every obvious decision either. score!)

Thanks for the feedback, Richard and Anonymous. I may well try both services out on a couple of my other sites.

Thanks for this - I’ve been looking for a hit counter, but perhaps I’m better off without one.
