Information Overload

August 28th, 2006 · 9 Comments

One of the biggest problems I’m facing at the moment in my quest to make money online is information overload. There are so many websites out there dedicated to providing information on how best to optimize your site, how to increase your web traffic, linking strategies, stickiness, CTR, RSS, CSS, HTML, XHTML, PHP, POP, PAP, black hat, white hat, black and white hat, black and white cat…….ARRRRGH!

I’ve been designing websites for around 10 years now. Some have been hobby sites. Some have been commercial sites. I’ve always approached them in the same way and that is to make it as easy to navigate the site as possible for the user. Never make any content more than 3 clicks away. With this in the back of my mind, I guess I’ve followed a formulaic approach to website design.

Ever since I started reading all of these ‘tips’ sites, my brain is now full to overflowing with all sorts of strategies and theories that when I sat down earlier today to do some work for one of my website customers, I had writers block. I stared at a blank screen for so long that I think I’ve permanently damaged my retinas.

OK possibly not but I’ve never experienced anything quite like that before. Instead of making my life as a web designer simpler, they’ve actually screwed me up. My head is so full of information that there’s no room left for any of the creative stuff which used to come so easily.

A lot of the information I’ve absorbed over the last couple of months has been of great benefit and will no doubt help me in my quest to make money. However the vast majority of it has been complete and utter bollocks. The same content regurgitated by a different site with a different spin. The one common denominator being that they want you to spend money on their product to help “Guarantee #1 Google Rankings”.

Is there a modern method of trepanning which doesn’t require my housemate setting about by noggin with a Black and Decker? I really hope so because I think my brain is going to explode.

Just as a quick addition to this post, I created a folder in my Favourites marked “Need To Read”. This folder is where I put websites that I’d skim read but thought they warranted a proper read when I had more time.

It currently stands at over 40 sites. The majority of these sites contain multiple pages that I want/need to read. At least 10 of them I was gobsmacked by the content and really need to spend a day or so soaking up all of the information.

I think I’m going to have to delete the category marked The Balance in recognition of the fact that I now offically have no life! 😀
