Google spyware initiative

August 7th, 2006 · 1 Comment

The BBC News website carries a story this morning that Google are planning to start warning users about sites that carry spyware and other malicious programs.

It’s about time someone took a lead on this although I am concerned that it’s Google. When I first became aware of Google abround 10 years ago they were the small kid in the playground. Now they’re starting to flex their muscles a wee bit and I’m wondering where it’ll all end up.

Anyway, that’s beside the point. According to a research report quoted in the article on the BBC News website, 4-6% of websites contain harmful content. This figure increased to 64% when the link contained the term “free screensavers”.

Investing in quality anti-virus and anti-spyware software is essential if you use the internet. There are loads of free programs you can use and personally I use AVG for my anti-virus software and Ad-Aware for my anti-spyware software. Hey – I’m an out of work actor – I can’t afford to buy any software :(

This is a very good initiative and Google is again proving that it is not going to just sit back and see people take advantage and this is the spirit that everyone wanted to see.

I think this will help millions of users and keep their computer safe.
