I’ve just signed up to a service called Montastic which is a free website monitoring service. You can enter in up to 100 websites and Montastic will email you if any of them go down which is ideal if, like me, you manage a large number of sites.
I don’t know at this stage whether it has any kind of negative impact in terms of server resources but I can’t imagine it would. I’ll keep you posted, though.
A big thank you to Robert Gale at the brilliant A Welsh View website for bringing Montastic to my attention.

mon.itor.us is also a free service and provides detailed information about website performance monitored from several locations in America and Europe

Hi Avoyan,
Yeah sorry I didn’t mention mon.itor.us in the post but Robert does in the link. I must admit that I went with Montastic as it just seemed to be easier to get started straight away. Both products look very good and I may well give mon.itor.us a whirl in the future.
Cheers,
Mike

Just a quick update. Montastic has been..ermm..fantastic! It doesn’t impact on server loads and has told me when a site has been unavailable even if only for a couple of minutes. I had to reboot one of my servers the other day and Montastic emailed me within minutes. Well worth using, folks.
