eBay Buy StumbleUpon

May 31st, 2007 · 1 Comment

According to a report on 901am, eBay has purchased StumbleUpon for $75 million. The article quotes Michael Buhr, a senior director at eBay.

StumbleUpons downloadable toolbar provides an engaging and unique experience to its users, but it is the similarities in our approaches to the concept of community that make it such a compelling addition to eBay.

I love StumbleUpon. It’s the best content sharing site on the market, in my opinion. It’s easy to use, it’s fun and, most importantly, it’s not Digg. My initial reactions to the sale are

  1. At least it wasn’t Google
  2. Did eBay pay the Buy It Now price or leave it until 30 seconds before the end of the auction?
  3. Will they be pissed off when it arrives and it turns out to be a shitty Taiwanese pirated version?

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 19 2008

TechCrunch are reporting that after just 16 months that eBay are now trying to sell StumbleUpon.

As a huge fan of StumbleUpon I’d hate to think this is the end of the road.
