An introduction to SEO

August 5th, 2006 · No Comments

Search Engine Optimization is all about making your website more search engine friendly. There are hundreds – no, thousands of companies out there who will charge you a fortune to optimize your website and promise you that you’ll be #1 on Google. Well they’re all lying.

Firstly, if there was a proven way of being #1 in Google then we’d all be doing it, right? The fact of the matter is that there is no hard and fast way of guaranteeing anything with the Big 2.

The Big 2 are the search engines you need to concentrate on. Google and Yahoo!  Between them they control pretty much all of the search engine results across the globe. AOL? Powered by Google! MSN? Powered by Yahoo! What about good ol’ Jeeves? I mean he strikes me as being an independent kinda guy. Well he’s powered indirectly by Google. There are others but when you look at market share, these are the two you need to build your site for.

Despite what the SEO experts say, there’s no guarantee with SEO. The algorithms which power the engines are changed on a regular basis so what worked one month won’t necessarily work the next. I know. I worked on a site for a customer which was #1 for their specific search term on Google for months. Google changed the search algorithm and they dropped to #5 overnight. Still on the coveted first page but not #1.

There are so many factors to consider with SEO that it will take me weeks to cover them all and I’m no expert – I’m an out of work actor who happens to know a bit about SEO. The relationships between all of the search engines change on a regular basis as one company buys another but these are the two guys you need to build your website for.

I’m sure that once Twenty Steps becomes more popular that some SEO geek expert will tell me I’m wrong but in the meanwhile I’m all you’ve got :)

If you want to know a bit more about how search engines work then have a look at Search Engine Watch which is a good resource. In the meanwhile, I will add some more pages onto Twenty Steps which will show you the basics of making sure your site covers all of the bases.
